As we wrap up winter in western Montana and start looking ahead to spring, it’s hard not to reflect on just how unusual this past season really was.

This winter brought some of the warmest temperatures many of us can remember. Instead of long stretches of deep snow and bitter cold, western Montana experienced extended mild weather that allowed people to get outside and enjoy activities that normally wouldn’t even be possible this time of year.

For many residents, winter felt more like an early preview of spring — and in some cases, even summer. What was very strange to many was waiting for the bitter cold and snow that typically arrives in winter, and it just never showed up.

Trails stayed accessible longer, outdoor recreation lasted well beyond the typical season, and many people took advantage of conditions that felt almost unheard of for Montana winters. From hiking and biking to spending extra time outdoors with family and friends, this season gave people opportunities that don’t usually come around until months later.

Why This Winter Felt So Different in Montana

Personally, one of the biggest surprises was being able to golf outdoors in January. Golfing in Montana in the middle of winter is something that almost never happens, yet this year made it possible. Moments like that really highlighted just how different this winter turned out to be.

Daylight Saving Time means turning our clocks forward and gaining more evening daylight — something many Montanans eagerly look forward to each year. Longer days, more sunshine, and gradually warming temperatures signal that spring is right around the corner.
