Montana is beef country it is also home to some of the best steak houses around. I occasionally have been known to like a good steak. Who am I kidding, the only reason it is "occasionally", is because I can't afford to eat steak regularly. I would if I could.

Signing a "Waiver" to Eat a Burger?

In case you missed it, there was a story in the NY Post about a U.S. tourist who was visiting a Toronto hotel. He ordered a hamburger and asked for it to be cooked "medium". The hotel had him sign a waiver in order to eat the burger because according to the hotel, a burger should be "cooked to 71 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Fahrenheit) for 15 seconds to reduce the chance of bacterial survival". That would make the burger "well done". I don't think something like that would ever work in Montana.

Sometimes a Steak Can be Too Rare

I have a friend who likes his steak rare. So rare that when he orders it in a restaurant, he asks for it to be cooked as rare as "legally possible". He is considerate of not getting anyone in trouble. My opinion may be in the minority, but I am not a fan of rare cooked meat. Don't get me wrong, I don't like it "well done" either, but under-cooked meat to me just isn't appetizing. Speaking of appetizing, you should check out the way Gordon Ramsey cooked venison?

How Montanans Like Their Steak

I was curious to find out if I am in the minority on how I like my steaks done. I asked our listeners how they like their steak cooked on a scale of 1 to 5 using the photo below. By the way, I am a number 2.

  1. Well done
  2. Medium well
  3. Medium
  4. Medium rare
  5. Rare

The results are in and a majority of people like their steaks at number 3 followed by 2. There are some 4's and some 5's, very few people like it "well done". Some commentors like it cooked more on the rare side, but, according to them, some restaurants may be afraid to serve it that rare.

For Now Montana Doesn't Make You Sign A Waiver To Eat Steak

I am not as much in the minority as I thought I would be, maybe it is just the people that I hang out with that like their steaks that rare. No matter how you like your steak, at least for the time being, you won't have to sign a waiver in Montana when you order your steak cooked the way you like it.
