Viral Video Shows Montana Horse Saved by Good Samaritan

One of my favorite kinds of Montana stories are stories of neighbors helping neighbors.

Earlier this summer, Morgan Lane Sharif posted a video to her Instagram page that has been liked well over 100,000 times. In the hashtags, you'll see references to Missoula, the Bitterroot Valley, and a "Montana Moment" among other references.

This video is definitely a Montana moment, from start to finish.

The video starts with footage of a horse caught on its side, its legs tangled in the lines of a fence. Across the top of the video is the caption "saved a horse."

Keep in mind that this situation is very different than wild animals who might be having trouble. As we've learned from Montana, Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, wildlife should be left alone, even if they are hurt. In instances when the animal is infected or suffering, within city limits, you should call 911. But this situation was with a domesticated animal, so it's a bit different.

It seemed the humans weren't the only ones who wanted to help the trapped animal. As you can see in the video, one of the other horses uses its front leg, as if trying to help.

@morganzlane describes in the post that they tried calling the owners for help but didn't get a response. That's when they "jumped into action."

Saved a Horse

Fortunately, the story had a happy ending. While some expressed gratitude in the comments, others had a little fun with it, too.

"As a horse owner thank you SO SO much for doing this," one person said.

"Her friend over there like "damnit Becky not again."

And of course, one person asked, "Did you ride a cowboy" with three laughing emojis, referencing the song "Save a Horse [Ride a Cowboy]" by Big & Rich.
