August in Montana is a month of extremes.

Heat and Hazard: Wildfire Season Arrives

It can be one of the hottest months of the year, with temperatures easily climbing into triple digits. It's also the heart of wildfire season, when smoke from fires across the West often settles over the Treasure State.

The smoke doesn't always come from Montana. Depending on weather patterns, wildfire smoke frequently drifts in from neighboring states like Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, as well as from Canada. Some summers, hazy skies become a daily reality throughout much of the state.

A Transitioning Landscape: From Summer to Fall

But while August can bring scorching afternoons and smoky conditions, it's also the month when Montana begins its transition toward fall.

Every day after the summer solstice gets a little shorter, and by late August, those shorter days become noticeable. The sun takes longer to warm things up each morning, and overnight temperatures often begin dropping into the 40s and even the 30s in some valleys and mountain communities.

Chilly Mornings: Early Signs of Autumn

Those cool mornings are one of the first signs that autumn isn't far away.

Some of these cooler Augusts featured prolonged stretches of below-average temperatures, early-season snow in the mountains, and chilly mornings that had many Montanans reaching for their sweatshirts instead of shorts.

According to NOAA climate data, these are the 10 coolest Augusts ever recorded in Montana based on statewide average temperatures. They serve as a reminder that even after a hot summer, Mother Nature can deliver an early taste of fall. Out of the top 10, I have experienced half of them.

Forecasting the Future: What August Might Hold

While there's no guarantee this August will end up among the coolest on record, history shows cooler weather can settle in sooner than many people expect.

As the days continue getting shorter and September approaches, cooler mornings and crisp evenings will become more common across Montana, even if summer isn't quite ready to let go.
