The way people shop for groceries is changing and mostly for the better. People want to get healthy and even our government has taken steps forward to ban certain dyes from being in our food.

Now, the State of Montana is considering making a big change to the way people spend their SNAP benefits.

Montana SNAP Benefits Change

In a press release shared on Tuesday (3/31), it was announced that Governor Gianforte submitted a waiver to ban soft drinks, junk food, and candy from being purchased with SNAP benefits.

"For too long, leaders in Washington have ignored the root causes of chronic disease that affect the lives of Americans across our country," Governor Gianforte said in the release, "Thanks to the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, and Secretary Rollins, we are taking bold steps to Make America Healthy Again."

"Montana is proud to join them in the effort to prioritize access to nutrient-rich foods to help improve health outcomes."

The obvious goal here is to have SNAP recipients make healthier choices and on one hand - it makes sense.

Is someone getting the most nutritious option possible with the SNAP money when the recipient purchases an energy drink or a candy bar? Probably not.

On the other hand, some people might feel like their food choices should remain just that - theirs. What if someone wants to treat their child on their birthday and can only afford the birthday cake/candy with SNAP benefits?

Montana Targets High Sugar Drinks, Foods

Personally, I try to live a healthier lifestyle. I've had my fun and now it's time to take care of myself so I can be there for my family.

But does that mean it's my place to tell others what to eat? Certainly not.

But if you're dining on someone else's dollar, the right thing to do is order within the parameters set by the person paying - seems logical in my opinion.

It's also not like these items are being banned from being purchased, you can buy them with your own money.

I've said what I think and now I want to know what YOU think. I invite any and all conversation too - this isn't an attack on anyone, it's simply how I feel. I believe it's important to have dialogue and for people to use their voice.

Do you agree with this potential new rule if it goes through? Do you disagree? I would love to hear why for either side. Share your thoughts with me HERE.
