During a casual stroll around my neighborhood recently, I noticed a ton of great Halloween decorations going up. I also noticed some homes only had a purple light on their front porch. I assumed it was a poor attempt at a Halloween decoration. Until I learned that it represents something much more meaningful than a Halloween display.

You may remember a trend that started a few years back called "Operation Green Light." This trend encouraged people to put green lightbulbs on their front porch lights to signify that the household stood with veterans and was a safe place to go if a veteran needed help with anything.

According to usar.army.mil

"Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being. "Greenlight" is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement. The simple action of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans, and "greenlight" them forward as valued members of our communities."

"Operation Green Light" is recommended for the month of November, especially around Veterans Day. For the month of October, there is another trend in front porch lights that aims to raise awareness for a good cause. This time it is for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to mymodernlaw.com

Domestic abuse affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in our community, and this October we’re letting them know that we are here to help them find their “lightbulb moment”. Whether you’re in need of a conversation, a friend, a safe haven, a guide, a resource, or any other system of support, we are here. For anyone who’s been pushed down for so long that it feels normal to be abused, we are here. For women and men, young and old, who don’t know that there is a way out, we are here.
