No Fireworks, But Fire, Steam, and Fun at Missoula’s 4th of July

It may have started as a celebration of America's Bicentennial. But Missoula's oldest 4th of July event has grown into a day that celebrates Montana life "the way it was' by moving history forward into the future.

This year the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula is once more inviting everyone to the "4th at the Fort Celebration", which runs all day Tuesday at the museum grounds on the west side of Missoula. It's the triumphant continuation of the 4th, which like so many things, had been canceled by the pandemic before returning in 2022.

And whether you like to see traditional arts and crafts, see the steam engine, or just kick back with some live music, this is a celebration to see and do things, including meeting up with old friends.

A day full of fun

The 4th at the Fort starts at 10 in the morning and runs right up until 4 pm on Tuesday. And even then, you have to keep moving if you want to experience everything on the schedule.

For many visitors, the highlight is watching the operation of the Museum's collection of historic logging and farming equipment. That includes the operation of the Troutwine Family's Case steam engine and sawmill, antique tractors, and a chance to see the historic Willamette locomotive which is being carefully restored.

There are also model railroad displays by the Missoula Model Railroad Club and activities in the old "Drummond Depot".

But that's not all

Elsewhere on the grounds, there will be a stage with live music, children's games and a variety of displays and historical activities.

And to satisfy your hunger pangs, and your thirst, vendors will be on hand with food trucks and cold beer throughout the day.
