As summer deepens into July, fire danger for Western Montana has been elevated to 'Moderate" by city and county officials.

Chairman of the Missoula County Fire Protection Association, Matt Hall, said the decision was made to elevate fire danger in the county on Thursday.

"As we see some higher temps throughout this week and into next week, we just want to make people aware that fire danger is increasing throughout Western Montana," Hall said. "For the 4th of July, fireworks were illegal in both the city, and throughout the state and national forests. Also, open burning is still allowed in Missoula County, so that includes checking your burn after you've extinguished that to make sure it's dead out."

A quick check with city police and fire departments showed an unusually small number of fireworks complaint calls over the 4th of July.

Hall refers county residents to the MCFPA website for more tips on fire safety.
