We are pretty sure the wearer of such fine fashion will not be asked, "Were they grown in Montana?"

Not that it can't be done with what can be hunted here. Buffalo and even deer come to mind. And we're sure our friend Robert Mitchell at Mitchell Custom Boots in Corvallis, Montana, could tell you a story or two. It's just that most of the more exotic species used for this popular footwear choice - kangaroo, ostrich, elephant - aren't exactly grazing in large herds along the Rocky Mountain Front.

And did we mention gator? We got wind of a feature article published in the Houston Chronicle about a local company that is taking boot selection to new heights. And boy, does it pack a price tag!

The Chronicle tells us that through their outfitters division, Republic Boot Company of  Houston is offering a one-of-a-kind experience where customers can head out on a guided alligator hunt to bag the gator that will be turned into their own handcrafted boots. For $5,000, the full package includes the hunt, permits, gear, custom bootmaking, and even a taxidermied gator head to take home as a trophy.

Hunters need not journey far. The hunts take place only an hour outside of Houston  during alligator season in September. Republic Boot Company says this is where the gators are the perfect size and quality for boot leather.

Once the hunter's alligator is tanned and the hide makes its way back during what is about an eight-process, the customer can follow their gator's journey, as their boots are made by hand to their exact specifications.

Republic Boot Company owner Chris Conrad was quoted in the article as saying that "It’s a blend of adrenaline, craftsmanship, and some pretty cool Texas bragging rights. It’s tying in this experience with an incredible product. You can’t buy that experience anywhere else.”
