U.S. Senator Steve Daines sent a letter to President Trump asking the administration to delay requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005 for Montanans. Daines wrote that a large number of Montanans will not have REAL ID compliant identification by the October 2020 deadline.

Without a delay, Montanans will no longer be able to use their state-issued non-REAL ID driver’s license to enter secured federal government facilities or board airplanes. According to Daines, that could significantly impact business and travel in the state. Daines also mentioned that some veterans seeking care could face difficulties in entering a base to see their doctor.

Currently, over 90% of Montana ID’s issued are not yet compliant according to the Montana Department of Justice. Montana is making strides to comply with the REAL ID law and the State has been working to inform the public of the deadline. Daines asked President Trump to grant an emergency waiver for the State of Montana for one year.
