This Bitterroot Gem Among Best in U.S. for Retirees
While small towns like Whitefish and Bigfork are getting some attention this week for being among the best "mountain towns" in the United States, the largest town in the Bitterroot Valley has not only the mountain attributes, but the kind of vibes that are placing it on the list of "Best Small Towns in America for Retirees."
Travel & Leisure has singled out Hamilton, the county seat of Ravalli County, before. This latest list is also singing the praises of the hub of the Bitterroot, but saying it's perfect for a person's "golden years."
Why is Hamilton perfect for retirement?
The article notes retirees are looking for small towns, with a lower cost of living than metro areas, with "cultural richness" and recreational activities close by.
The authors single out Hamilton for retirees who are "independent, active, and enjoy being outdoors. They praise the Bitterroot's "wide open spaces" combined with a "strong community atmosphere", also noting Missoula's proximity to shopping and other services.
🍎 Hamilton's other features include the Ravalli County Museum and "small farms, ranches, and orchards."
What did they miss?
Not much, although there are some things I'd add, given my conversations with retirees, a number of whom have moved over from the coast.
For one thing, healthcare services in Hamilton have improved dramatically over the past 15-years, with the expansion of Marcus Daily Hospital into Bitterroot Health, offering most of the advanced services available without the drive to Missoula.
Politically, many retirees love the political atmosphere as well, adopting a more traditional conservative view that doesn't often veer into more radical positions.
Homes remain more affordable, and new units are coming online. Although if you have a wad of cash, there are plenty of big places to spend it.
Hamilton's downtown is also vibrant and charming, especially in the fall with the backdrop of blue sky and vibrant colors.
Getting outdoors
Finally, there are a variety of trails and other activities that can be matched to your skills and abilities as you age. Miles of trails can challenge you with climbs into the canyons of the Bitterroot Front, or you can amble along the trails on the edge of town at Skalkaho Bend, and other areas along the river.
