Starting Wednesday and continuing through the fall, Missoula Police will place a greater emphasis on safety while pedestrians are using city crosswalks.

Traffic Sergeant Greg Amundsen says officers will be instructing pedestrians and drivers on the proper ways to safely cross the street, as well as helping drivers better understand how to provide pedestrians enough time to get safely across the street, especially now that school has started and there are more pedestrians on the street.

Amundsen says bicyclists using the roadways must also stop for pedestrians, and that bicyclists are legally allowed to ride on sidewalks, as long as they slow down to walking speed when they cross at a crosswalk.

Amundsen says crosswalk violations are misdemeanors, but a lack of safety can lead to a potentially dangerous accident.
