If one big time comic convention in the west is good, then lovers of the genre must be ecstatic over two conventions. Maybe so, but there is some confusion and some legal issues to clear up over the name.

Everyone knows Comic-Con in San Diego, right? Well, organizers of a Salt Lake City convention were granted a trademark for Salt Lake Comic Con (no hyphen). And suddenly lawyers are leaping tall buildings with a single bound to get in on this action.

San Diego Comic-Con organizers say that Salt Lake's use of "Comic Con" is federal trademark infringement. Settlement talks have broken down and the case appears to be headed for trial.

Here's my humble take: Hey, Salt Lake, If you don't have the class and imagination to come up with your own name---at least something that isn't so obviously a knock-off of a well-established event, then you probably don't have the talent to put on a very good convention, either! Like I'm EVER going to one of these!  :-) Still, here's rooting for a San Diego victory!   DB
