Throughout the marketing for Terminator Genisys, we haven’t really seen much (if at all) of University of Montana graduate J.K. Simmons, who appears to play a detective who helps Emilia Clarke’s Sarah Connor in the upcoming prequel-sequel-alternate timeline-something-or-other. That changes now with a new TV spot in which the recent Oscar-winner features prominently, also offering up some new footage from the film.

Simmons plays Detective O’Brien, whose resting state appears to be flustered, and made worse by this whole doomsday threat scenario. What better way to attract more interest than by resting on a recent Oscar-winner?

You know the drill: Sarah Connor & Co. must prevent Skynet from becoming sentient to stop Judgment Day from happening. Only this time, the timeline is a bit different and kind of nuts. Kyle Reese is sent back to find Sarah Connor, who’s been raised since childhood by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, which means she’s already a badass.

Everything we’ve seen so far from Terminator Genisys (including that title — come on) hasn’t exactly inspired confidence, but we have at least some faith in director Alan Taylor, whose weird, dark sci-fi work on Thor: The Dark World made for a pretty interesting movie. (Personally, I think it’s better than the first Thor, but your mileage may vary.)

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future…

Terminator Genisys hits theaters on July 1.
