Each year the cut-off road between Stevensville and Highway 93 becomes a gathering place for scarecrows. And they're not just any scarecrows - the imaginations go wild and secrecy is high as the creations are developed. Only a few are scary and most are whimsical fun. The deadline for entering the contest is 5 p.m. Monday, October 1. Entry fee is $30. There is $500 available for prize winners. Entry forms are at www.scarecrowcontest.org. Living statue entries are free. The scarecrows are being built by families, individuals, businesses, clubs and non-profits. This 14th annual event also includes "living statues" on Friday, October 5, when viewing and voting by the public begins at 4 p.m. It's also First Friday in Stevensville, with late store openings, a free straw maze, a giant slide and music and dancing. The viewing, voting and straw maze continue through the weekend. Scarecrow Winners will be announced Monday, according to Lorraine Roach of the Stevensville Main Street Association. Weather permitting, the scarecrows will be on display until October 14th.

The Friday events include a Stevi High School Homecoming Parade at 2:45, kids' carved/decorated pumpkin contest at 3rd and Main. a spaghetti feed at St Mary's Family Center from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Groovs Dance Studio dancing scarecrows at 6 p.m. Saturday, the Farmers Market will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the ribbon-cutting of the new bicycle rack at St Mary's Mission will be at 1 p.m. Scarecrow Voting ballots will be found, along with Scarecrow T-shirts for sale, at the Main Street Association office, next to Veterans Park.
