Wednesday is the big day.

Classes for kindergarten through ninth grade get underway in Missoula Schools District One, and over 9,000 children will be heading to the various elementary, middle and high schools in the city and county.

Communications Director Hatton Littman reminded students and their parents that there is only one day of summer left.

“We repeat this over and over again, that Wednesday, August 29th is the opening day of classes for kindergarten through the ninth grade,” said Littman. “Our 10th, 11th and 12th grade students at our county high schools will have their first of classes on Thursday, August 30th.”

Littman said thousands of Missoula children will be entering schools that have undergone extensive renovation to enhance safety.

“Our schools that will open first that have been renovated include Russell Elementary School, and they are scheduled to have completed their construction by the first day of school,” she said. “Hellgate High School has been under construction for the past two academic years and they will continue their construction into this winter. Then, late in the fall we will be able to have students enter the new Jeanette Rankin Elementary School and Willard Alternative Learning High School Program.”

Littman made a point to emphasize the fact the MCPS from kindergarten through high school will be implementing their new English Language Arts curriculum this school year.

Littman said any parents who may have just moved to Missoula and wish to enroll their children into the public schools can get all the details on the MCPS website.
