Missoula police arrested a 39-year-old Missoula resident on six charges on New Year's Day after he called 911 on himself. Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh says the arrest was made around noon in the 500 block of West Kent.

"He, in fact, called 911 and reported a disturbance with his girlfriend," Welsh said. "Officers responded and made contact with both and the individual was subsequently arrested for Strangulation of a Partner or Family Member, Partner or Family Member Assault, Unlawful Restraint, Tampering with a Communication Device, Possession of drug Paraphernalia and Criminal Possession of a Dangerous Drug."

Welsh says the unlawful restraint charge occurred after an incident in the bathroom.

"At one point they were both in the bathroom and he was refusing to allow her to leave the room," Welsh said. "He took her cellphone from here when she was going to call for help. It appears that the female in this case suffered soft tissue injury, she was subsequently transferred to the hospital by a private party that agreed to take her."

The drug charges involved pertain to marijuana. This was the individual's first Partner or Family Member Assault charge and, of the six charges, only the strangulation charge was a felony.
