Man Wielding Hatchet and Knife Flees- Fights with Police
Missoula Police had to chase and subdue 28 year-old Kyle Herring early Friday morning after a car chase and foot race that included the suspect threatening police with a hatchet and a knife.
Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the incident began early Friday morning in downtown Missoula.
“An officer noticed a vehicle sitting idle in the roadway at Toole and Broadway,” began Welsh. The officer went by once, did a U-turn to make contact with the driver, and the vehicle sped away. The officer pursued the vehicle as it eventually turned southbound in Reserve and then westbound again, until it came to a stop in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Union Pacific. At that point, the driver got out and fled on foot.”
Welsh said the suspect then threatened the officers who gave chase.
“After a short distance, the male turned and was seen holding what was described as a hatchet,” he said. “The officers ordered him to drop his weapon and the suspect turned again to flee on foot. Eventually, the male turned again and this time he was seen holding the hatchet in his right hand and a small knife in his left hand.”
Welsh said the officers able to speak with the male and he eventually dropped his weapons, however he refused to place his hands in the air.
“The officers attempted to restrain the male, but he thrashed around, kicked his legs and continued to resist their efforts until he was eventually taken into custody,” he said. “He was identified as 28 year-old Kyle Herring from Spokane Valley. He was charged with felony assault with a weapon, obstructing a police officer and fleeing from police.
Herring is in the Missoula County Jail on $50,000 bond.
