51-year-old Michael Young is in the Missoula County Jail facing felony charges for theft and criminal mischief after allegedly stealing tools and vandalizing a local construction job site.

Missoula Police Department Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold provided details about the incident that occurred on Wednesday, September 14.

“Officers responded to an in-progress burglary in the 4800 block of North Reserve at a construction site,” began Arnold. “The caller to 911 had visual on the suspect and provided direction of travel and clothing description to officers. An officer located the male who refused to identify himself to the responding officers. The male was taken into custody and the officer could see a sleeping bag full of tools sticking out.”

Arnold further described the evidence that was observed at the construction site.

“The male was taken into custody and the officer could see a sleeping bag that was full of tools,” she said. “The tools were in plain sight to the officer. Additional officers responded to the construction site and observed another backpack full of tools belonging to the company. They observed a point of entry where damage was done to the fenced-off area and multiple construction trailers had been damaged.”

Court documents state that Young allegedly broke a rafter square and punctured all four tires on a construction trailer at the site. In addition, a large tire on a CAT reach fork was punctured and still had the air hissing out when police arrived.

Arnold said the suspect refused to identify himself to officers on the scene.

“Officers collected statements, took photos, and documented the scene,” she said. “The suspect was taken to jail still refusing to identify himself. It was not until later that the male was identified as Michael Young. This case is still under investigation with the Missoula Police Department Detective Division and Young has been held on multiple felony charges at the Missoula County Detention Center.”

Young appeared Friday afternoon in Missoula Justice Court to face the felony charges.
