Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 27, 2024, at around 4:00 AM, 27-year-old David Hunter called 911 and reported that he had been shot in the chest. Dispatch advised law enforcement of this call and directed Missoula Police Department officers to report to the area of North Avenue and South Clark Street. An officer arrived and asked Hunter where he was shot. Hunter told the officer he was shot in the back two months ago and stated he did not need medical attention.

The officer noticed that Hunter was visibly intoxicated, the smell of alcohol was emanating from his person, and he was having a hard time standing. Hunter’s story continued to change, and it became readily evident to the officer that Hunter made a false report about being shot that evening.

Officers determined that they had probable cause to charge Hunter with False Report to a Peace Officer and that they would provide him with a ride home. Prior to allowing him in a patrol vehicle, Officers informed Hunter that they would need to conduct a cursory pat down. Hunter became apprehensive and mentioned that he had a weapon on his person. He revealed .22 caliber handgun which was removed from his person.

After this, officers determined they now had probable cause for an additional offense, Carrying a Concealed Weapon while Under the Influence, and that it was appropriate to place Hunter under arrest.

Hunter was escorted to the front of a patrol vehicle, and a search incident to arrest occurred. An officer discovered a key chain with a small metal cylinder attached that contained cocaine. Inside Hunter’s coat pocket, the officer also discovered a black cannabis container that contained a clear bag with a large amount of cocaine. Lastly, the officer discovered $600 cash and two phones on Hunter’s person.

The officers made multiple observations that from their training and experience are consistent with the distribution or sale of dangerous drugs. At the time of this incident, the officer was aware that cocaine sales in Missoula had recently increased, specifically around the downtown area.

Hunter is currently being charged with felony criminal possession with intent to distribute, felony unlawful use/possession of property subject to criminal forfeiture, felony false reports to peace officers, and carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence. His bond was set at $15,000.
