Growing up in Missoula when I was younger, I would walk everywhere out of necessity. As I got older and graduated to a skateboard, then a bicycle, and eventually a car, it expanded my horizons. I was able to go further and faster than walking. When that happened, there are now places around town where I don’t walk anymore. I travel by car the majority of the time.

A Simple Walk, a Forgotten Memory

Recently when walking down a street where I normally drive, I saw a small piece of Missoula history that brought back a lot of memories. It wasn’t anything big, just the remains of a sticker on a lamp post, but it brought me back to a different time. I can't tell you how many thousands of times I have driven by that sticker and not noticed it, until recently.

The sticker was from an old radio station that no longer exists in Missoula. “XT-93 The Music FM” was a pop music station that, at one time, was one of the most popular radio stations in town. It also happens to be the radio station where I got my start over thirty years ago.

XT-93: The Station That Defined a Generation

Over the years, Missoula radio has changed quite a bit. XT-93 changed its format to 93.3 Eagle Country a few decades ago. We have also seen many radio stations and announcers come and go. Like most things, change happens.

But some things never change on local radio. The people who work in Missoula continue to care deeply about our community and the people who still listen to the radio. Who knows, you may call up and win tickets to a local concert or a movie one day. For some younger folks, the idea of picking up a phone and talking to a person on the radio is a foreign concept, but it still happens. That's one of the things I appreciate about being on the radio.

I do know one more thing: I need to walk around Missoula more and see what little pieces of our past I can still find and cherish around town while they are still there.
