For Those Who Want ‘Off-Grid’ Lifestyles, Montana is one of the Best
After last year's major wind event that we had in Western Montana, I started to think more about what my family and I can do if or when it happens again. How can we get better at surviving and thriving off the grid if the need arises?
When last year's wind event happened, my neighborhood was without power for almost five days. Growing up in an older house in Montana, losing power happened frequently but not for almost five days.
Montana Ranks High for Off-Grid Living
Since then, I have taken some steps to help my family in case it happens again. Nothing big- we aren't anywhere near being able to live off grid for an extended period of time. If we ever do decide to live off the grid, we are lucky to be in Montana. This is one of the best places in the country for those that want to live off grid.
According to HomeGnome.com which analyzed the best states for living off grid, Montana ranks ninth. Montana would have ranked much higher if it weren't for our climate. Our state isn't the most comfortable for off-grid living; so much so that we rank forty-ninth. We rank highest in our feasibility ranking. There are already people who are successfully living off grid in Montana.
The highest-ranked state is Iowa. They rank so high due to their moderate climate, access to rural healthcare, and successful renewable energy systems.
The state where it would be the hardest to live off grid is Rhode Island, followed by New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maryland.
Montanans are hardworking, independent people, and this rating continues to prove it.
