Montana Ranks Among Most Expensive States for Childcare in 2025
When my wife and I were starting our family and had our first child, there were so many people wanting to offer advice, sayings and tips on parenting that it was difficult to keep track of it all.
There were two things that were told to me that I still remember to this day. First, I was told to rest, nap, or sleep whenever I got the chance. To this day, I still do that whenever I can, even though my children are grown.
The second thing I remember wasn't a piece of advice as much as a truth. A friend of mine said that the biggest raise they ever received was when their kids stopped going to daycare and went to school. For my family that was true as well.
My family had two children in daycare at the same time for a few years, and the cost of childcare was more than our mortgage every month. This was years ago, and like most everything else in this world, the price of daycare has just continued to get more expensive.

Montana's Ranks 16th in Childcare Cost
According to WalletHub, Montana ranks as the 16th most expensive state for childcare for married couples. Single-parent families rank better, coming in at 34. The rankings also include Washington D.C.
The rankings are based on the percentage of "median family income". They also looked at "family-based child care" compared to "center-based child care".
The state with the most expensive childcare for married couples is New York. The most expensive daycare for single parent families is found in Washington D.C. South Dakota has the cheapest daycare of any state with both married couples and single parent households.

Having children hasn't always been cheap and it looks like childcare isn't getting any cheaper these days either.
