Missoula used to have a weekend devoted to cleaning out those sheds and garages of hazardous waste material. "HazWaste Days" was something that I looked forward to every fall as I cleaned out my garage over the summer.

These days there is no longer a need for "HazWaste Days". That is actually some good news. Missoula now has a more consistent way to dispose of your hazardous waste.

Home Resource, at 1515 Wyoming Street in Missoula is offering chemical waste disposal. They have teamed up with Missoula Public Health to offer these services. Dealing with hazardous waste and chemicals isn't easy and there are a lot of guidelines that need to be followed.

This is a drop-off, fee-based service. There is a $20 fee to register, and then you will need to make an appointment for dropping off your waste.

Some of the common household waste includes:

  • Flammable or combustible paints and solvents (oil based wood stains)
  • Automotive fluids (gas, diesel fluid, oil)
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Products with mercury (thermostats, fluorescent lights)
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Acids
  • Caustics—sodium hydroxide for soap-making or drain cleaning

There have been times when I have missed my opportunity to take advantage of past "HazWaste Days", so whatever I needed to get rid of would spend another year in my garage. Now that can change.

Home Resource won't be able to take everything. There is limited space and the high cost of disposal will limit what they can take at this time. Currently they are looking for partners to help make this work for the Missoula area. Until then, you can sign up, make an appointment and finally clean up that garage or shed.
