You know that line from "A River Runs Through It?" The one where Brad Pitt says "Oh I'll Never Leave Montana?" The same can be said for me. Just the thought of moving away from Montana makes me uncomfortable. Even the promise of an amazing job would have to be pretty darn good to convince me to leave. The same goes for a lot of people who live here. So where do we go when we retire?

I have thought a lot about what I'm going to do when I retire. Don't we all daydream about the day we don't have to worry about work? Daydreaming on the clock can get you in trouble.

I have thought about places that are surrounded by hunting and fishing opportunities.

  1.  Helena? I could take advantage of fishing places like Holter, Canyon Ferry, Hauser etc.
  2. Lewistown? I am a short distance from phenomenal elk hunting and world-class fishing around Fort Peck Reservoir.
  3. Bitterroot Valley? Home is great when you live in a scene from a postcard.

The beautiful Bitterroot Valley is named the best place in Montana to retire.

According to MSN, The Bitterroot Valley is named the top place to retire in the state.

Those who enjoy outdoor adventures can take full advantage of the 1.6-million-acre Bitterroot National Forest, which offers hiking, hunting, rafting, fishing, biking, skiing, and more. Life in Ravalli County can be rugged—only 300 miles of the county's 550 miles of roads are paved. For those who live outside of towns, it can be more difficult to get basic services like mail, utilities, and emergency response. However, the communities are tight-knit, and neighbors are known for their willingness to help each other.

My mother told me that she would like to live in the Bitterroot Valley. I agree with her. It is such a beautiful place to call home. Maybe I will build Mom a cabin in the backyard?
