Ryan Reynolds Revives Montana’s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

How’s this for a remake? The 1974 crime buddy flick Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, featuring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges, is reportedly being remade. Yep, that Clint Eastwood, the “make my day” guy, and that Jeff Bridges, the Dude himself. The first movie was shot all over Montana: Great Falls, Fort Benton, Hobson, Choteau, and a few spots out in Lewis and Clark National Forest. Back then, it was half bank-heist picture, half road-trip movie, and all Montana postcard.

Now, Ryan Reynolds has signed on to remake that film at Amazon MGM. No word yet on where filming will take place, but considering that the original was essentially a two-hour tourism commercial for the Treasure State, why not bring it home?

The Dream Team (Maybe)

The internet is buzzing with rumors that Reynolds could fill the buddy movie slot with his old Deadpool & Wolverine buddy, Hugh Jackman. This is 100 percent fan theory, but c’mon, you can already see it. Reynolds as the slick-talking hustler, Jackman as the grizzled vet who’s seen too much. Fundamentally, Clint and Jeff with nicer skincare routines.

Just as Long as We Don’t End Up in “Montana-ish” Canada

Here’s the part that gets every local concerned: sometimes when Hollywood says “film takes place in Montana,” it means “we found a cheaper place in Alberta.” I’m not putting down our neighbors to the north, but Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is ours. If anyone deserves the camera glow this go-round, it’s Great Falls, Choteau, and Fort Benton.

So for now, we wait. If you spot a convoy of production trucks steaming through the countryside in central Montana with someone who suspiciously resembles Van Wilder at the wheel, don't be surprised.
