Bear Attacks Rising: Japan Calls the Military
Right now, Japan has a real bear problem. They have had over ten people killed and plenty more injured in just this year alone in the northern part of the country. Bears are coming out of the mountains and into town, swiping at trash like it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. Things have gotten so out of hand that Japan called in the military to come cull bears. Yeah, soldiers versus bears.
Meanwhile in Montana…
At home, we’ve had our share of bear encounters in 2025 as well. There are already multiple stories this hunting season. Not to mention the hikers and tourists being attacked or charged by grizzlies. And that is only what makes the news. Most of us already carry bear spray, and pray the guy next to us can run slower than we do. But each time I read a headline on “Bear Attacks in Montana,” I can’t help but think, when do we call in the troops?
Call in the Montana National Guard
It can't be that far-fetched to mobilize troops to combat predators. German and Allied troops paused in World War 1 to kill wolves. President Trump is sending in the National Guard to crack down on crime in big cities, and it is likely only a matter of time before someone makes a joking comment along the lines of: “I wonder if he will send the Montana National Guard to handle the grizzly situation."
Imagine the scene: tanks rumbling into Glacier, troops deploying bait stations, and a sergeant shouting “Bear down!” like it’s a football game.
Bears, Bullets, and Common Sense
Fortunately, we don’t have to bring in the military here in Montana. We’ve got wardens, hunters, and a fear of anything that can outrun, out-climb, and tear our faces off. But if things ever get out of hand. I will volunteer for the Army's Bear Combat Unit.
