The three permanent Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks check stations in the area report steady success for hunters in the general hunting season. The elk harvest at the Darby Check Station is 121, which is the highest at this point since the 2015 season. The Bonner station had 27 elk checked through and Anaconda had 23. The white-tailed deer total is slightly higher than last year at Darby, with 29 checked through. Last year at this time, the count was 21 white-tailed deer. Mule deer numbers were 18 at Darby, 20 at Bonner and 10 at Anaconda, according to Vivaca Crowser of Montana FWP. More hunters are out in the woods this year than last year. Darby's report was 2,352 hunters so far - 200 more than last year at this time. By the way, hunters are required to stop at the FWP check stations, whether you were successful or not.
