At first glance I didn't know what to think about this and other folks were questioning it as well but right now not a lot is known. With the low number of steelhead returning to Idaho for the second year in a row concerns are rising.

A couple groups want to see Idaho steelhead fishing closed to protect the wild steelhead. It's sounds like according to the Lewiston Tribune the group 'Idaho Rivers United', 'Friends of the Clearwater' and others filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue.

Like I said before not a lot is known at this point but in their defense the numbers are dropping and what they say is happening is that fishing for hatchery steelhead is leading to the killing of the wild steelhead.

Now wild steelhead are protected by the Endangered Species Act. The NOAA Fisheries Service talks about throughout the West Coast, 11 species of steelhead are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
