Did The Mayor Of Missoula Fall Asleep During City Council Meeting?
A lot of people have been there - you're at the end of a long day, you're tired and you're stressed, but you've just got his one last thing to do before you can relax... and then you end up falling asleep on a zoom meeting with all of your colleagues.
That's actually what happened to Missoula Mayor John Engen this week on a virtual City Council meeting, where it's reported he came off as groggy, had difficulty reading some documents, and appeared to nod off several times throughout the call.
Engen had spent most of the day on Monday testifying in court as a result of the legal battle that's been ensuing these past few years involving the acquisition of Missoula's drinking water system. So it seems that his exhaustion from that, coupled with some outside factors like the heat and the smoke, are to blame here. A few council members seem to agree that Engen should have passed off the duties of leading the meeting to council president Bryan von Lossberg.
Engen did apologize during the meeting, saying that it's "not what you all deserve from me," and was able to finish off the rest of it. I definitely don't envy having to sit there for those long court days and recount the same information over and over - I doubt he's the only one who'd nod off in this situation.
