Two more deer have been infected by Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Liberty and Carbon Counties of Montana. One of the deer is outside a previously designated CWD area. The confirmation of the contaminated tissue samples from a white-tailed deer and a mule deer was made by a Colorado State University test.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks has increased the areas of restrictions in the state, which had been free of CWD until last year. Now, all of Liberty County and Hunting District 400 is a CWD-positive area with Transport Restriction Zone (TRZ) rules, prohibiting hunters from taking any barin or spinal column tissue outside the zone. The TRZ zone now includes Liberty, Hill and Toole Counties. Officials would like hunters who harvest deer, elk or moose within the priority surveillance areas, (which includes the High-Line to the Canadian Border and Hunting Districts 210,212 and 217 in Western Montana) to submit animals for testing. You can contest the check stations or visit the Missoula FWP office on Spurgin. For more information, see the FWP website.
