Spain is famous for the Running of the Bulls, but I imagine a lot fewer folks are familiar with the running of the turnips.Yes, it lacks the romanticism associated with getting run over by a bull. But hey, turnips can still hurt! As the town "beast" discovered.

This occurs in tiny Piornal in southwestern Spain. They just held their annual "Jarramplas" festival, which include the yearly tradition of one volunteer dressing up in a costume of ribbons and a devil mask. Hundred of towns folk chase this character as he runs through the streets beating a drum, pummeling him with turnips until he just can't take it any longer.

Local farmers donate an estimated 18 tons of turnips. Some say the character represents a cattle thief being punished. Others say it has religious significance. Either way, we hope the beast was well enough to enjoy all the music and food afterwards....turnip burgers, casseroles and pancakes, I assume. Oh and don't forget the turnip ice cream!
