Missoula Rural Firefighters were busy this morning when a fifth-wheel caught fire in Lolo.

"About 3:45 this morning we were dispatched to a possible structure fire near the corner of Mormon Creek and HWY 93 South, just south of Lolo," said MRFD Battalion chief Blaine Cowan. "We found a fifth-wheel camper, fully involved right next to a metal structure building. Our crews were able to make a pretty quick attack on the fire and hold it right to the camper itself. The fire did cause a little bit of heat damage on the outside of the metal building."

No pets or people were killed in the blaze, although a man was taken to Community Medical Center. Cowan says the man was seen walking away from the fire without shoes or a shirt on. It turned out that he was the occupant of the structure and does not appear to have sustained serious injury. The fifth-wheel on the other hand is totally destroyed.

"There's not going to be real formal investigation on this one, [the cause] was very evident," Cowan said. "There was some sort of a make-shift wood stove inside of the camper. For all intents and purposes, it's going to be considered that the wood stove was the cause of the fire. There was so much damage, though, however, that even a formal investigation wouldn't bring anything to light... the fifth-wheel is completely gone."

Missoula Rural Fire fighters were aided by an engine from Florence fire, the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Northwestern Energy and Missoula emergency services incorporated.
