A winter storm warning has been issued for western Montana by the National Weather Service office in Missoula that will stretch all the way till Wednesday, December 4.

Meteorologist LeeAnn Allegretto said the rain on Monday morning will rapidly turn to snow in the afternoon, which will lead to frozen roads.

“Our biggest concern is that all the wet roads that people woke up to on Monday morning, those are going to freeze overnight,” Allegretto said. “So, whether there’s snow on top or not, there’s going to be a lot of black ice out there by Tuesday morning. Once this cold air comes in, it’s all or nothing, so once it’s in, it’s in, and everything that’s wet will freeze, so it’s going to get pretty messy.”

Allegretto said the winter conditions will be here for the near future.

“It’s a great question for everyone who loves cold weather, but a terrible question for those who don’t,” Allegretto said. “There’s very little end in sight for at least a week.”

Allegretto said the moist air from the Pacific will combine with strong winds from a Canadian cold front to create wind chill factors well below zero, especially at night. Anywhere from one to two feet of snow is expected for the mountain passes in western Montana.
