This year, about 10,000 (yes, 10,000) white ribbons are being distributed as support for ending domestic violence in Ravalli County.

The White Ribbon Week is October 22 to 28 and will culminate with the annual "Report to the Community" luncheon at Hamilton's City Hall at 12 noon Friday, October 27.

Sponsored by the Ravalli County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, the ribbons were hooked to small informational cards (see photo) by volunteers over the past weeks.

Sonya Bitterman said that some people wear a ribbon to honor lives lost. Others show support for survivors and other reasons include renewing their commitment to building a healthier community.

The Report to the Community will include a keynote address from Linda Olsen of the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She coordinated the "Domestic Violence Housing First" pilot project in Washington state.

And, for the 18th year, the group will present the Courage Award to a person who has made a difference to help end domestic violence.
