What is the Northwest Angle?

We had a story on the Craig & Al Morning Show that mentioned the Northwest Angle of Minnesota. Neither Craig nor I had ever heard of it so I went looking. A Google search turned up that it’s a part of northern Lake of The Woods County. It is the only place in the United States outside Alaska that is north of the 49th parallel, which forms the international border from the Angle west to Washington State.
The locals know it as The Angle, according to the latest census numbers 152 people live there. Almost 80% of the Angle is water. There’s only one road in and in the winter the best way to get in by snowmobile over the ice. There are a lot of resorts in the area focused on Lake of the Woods. The fishing is said to be world class for sauger, walleye, pike, musky, perch, and crappie.
