Gosh, I hope this won't cast a huge shadow on your vacation plans this summer!

They have had to cancel the annual National Hollerin' Contest in Spivey's Corner, North Carolina.

Organizers say it's been losing money for years. It's being suspended due to rising costs and lack of participation. Hard to have a hollerin' contest without enough hollerers. It's too bad, because proceeds went to the local fire department.

The contest started in 1969 as a tribute to the days before telephones when folks would holler out various sounds to reach the next farm down the road with important news. You probably needed to speak holler to know what they were screaming about, but they made it work.

I'll bet a lot of you wish your bosses would suspend their hollerin', huh?    DB
