Now, there's a pretty name for a plant, huh? Well, weed, actually. And it's a nasty one. Wildland Restoration students at the University of Montana will take the lead to control the spread of houndstongue, an invasive weed on Mount Sentinel's lower slopes. This Saturday, May 3, students and community volunteers will hold a work day to eradicated the invader before it establishes on other areas of the mountain. There will also be trash and barbed wire cleanup efforts.

Though invasive weeds have been on Mount Sentinel for more than 100 years, houndstongue is a more recent neighbor. It can out-compete native prairie flowers and produces sticky seeds that allow it to travel far to establish new plants. If you would like to be part of the volunteer effort, it's from Noon-4 on Saturday. You're asked to bring water and wear long sleeve shirts. Snacks will be provided. You can contact Kevin Carns, UM Student Association of Society for Ecological Restoration. kevin.carns@umontana.edu Kevin is also at 509-899-3425. DB
