I'd say they take texting and driving violations seriously in Bethesda, Maryland. And what the officer wrote on his hand-held sign will blow you away.

A Maryland police officer went undercover dressed as a homeless man, doing surveillance on drivers using their cell phones. Cpl. Patrick Robinson was equipped with a two-way radio and a body camera. He would relay violation notices to 8 fellow officers waiting down the road.

Who knows if anyone took this seriously, but Cpl. Robinson was holding up a sign that read, "I am not homeless. I am a Montgomery County police officer looking for cell phone texting violations. I wonder how many drivers used their camera phones as they went past him.

A total of 31 tickets and 9 warnings were issued to people who were caught that day. Authorities in the area say they are seeing more distracted driver deaths as a result of people using their cell phones while driving.

I guess if police take it more seriously, maybe we will, too. I sure hope so, anyway.  DB
