A giant boulder crashed down on U.S. Highway 12 at about 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, February 10, causing so much instability that the Montana Department of Transportation has decided to close the highway.

According to Missoula County Sheriff's Deputy Bill Burt, the word right now from the Montana Department of Transportation is that the road could be closed for "a couple of days."

Burt reported hearing further cracking sounds near the site of the boulder crash and said there appeared to be a heightened risk of further sliding.

Until the road is reopened. Commuters can still use Petty Creek / Graves Creek to get to I90, however Semi trucks will not be able to navigate all of the switchbacks.

Montana Department of Transportation will likely have to blast the boulder out of the roadway, because it is too big to move.
