Almost 200 people attended the long-delayed funeral of Army Corporal George Simmons at the Corvallis Cemetery Saturday, June 18.

The remains of Simmons were brought back from the Philippines this past week. His body had been buried at a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II. His identity was confirmed by DNA testing recently.

Groups of Bitterroot Valley residents gathered and waved flags along the procession route from Hamilton to Corvallis Saturday morning.

Family members placed roses on the coffin at the conclusion of the funeral.

George's name will now be included in the annual Memorial Day Ceremony, in which the names are announced of all the veterans buried at the Corvallis Cemetery.
