No matter where you’re from, if you’re in the great state of Montana right now, you know it’s archery season. You can’t drive through any town without seeing a bow hanging up in the back windshield of most trucks that pass by.

For the past seven years my husband has paid to put me in the drawing for a big horn sheep tag. The first year he put me in for the drawing, he thought I was a shoe-in. I should have been, because way back then the difference between the number of applicants and the number of tags given out was less than five. He was sure I would draw it, but sadly I didn’t.

With general rifle hunting season due to start on October 26, even officials at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are having problems getting information about federal public lands, due to the partial government shutdown.

My husband is an avid hunter, so he has had a few close encounters with wildlife in his day. However, he has never had an encounter quite as close as this hunter had. This hunter was enjoying a nice afternoon in a tree stand waiting for his prey to come along, when he was visited by an almost too friendly black bear.

September marks the beginning of the long-awaited hunting seasons in Montana. In fact, several seasons are already underway.

Just in case everyone in Missoula hasn’t heard yet, my husband drew a mountain goat tag. I’m not sure how there could possibly be anyone left in this town who hasn’t heard, as he has been on the phone nonstop since he found out.

My husband is a born and bred true Montanan. He loves and lives to fish, hunt, hike and enjoy the outdoors. During our married life, I have learned just how deep his obsession goes with this beautiful place we are lucky enough to call home.

Just a short drive east of Missoula sits one of Western Montana’s greatest fishing destinations, Rock Creek. Only a handful of streams across the world can even compare to the fishing that this creek has to offer.

If you have a child that is 11 years of age or older, they are eligible to take the hunter education course that is required by the state in order to purchase a hunting license. Due to a law passed in 2003, all people born after the January 1, 1985 must show a certificate of completion for this course in order to get their license.
