The National Weather Service has issued an alert that a cold front passing through the region tonight will bring a lot of wind and some travel difficulties over mountain passes.

Meteorologist Ryan Leach said a fast moving system out to our west is headed this way.

"It will come through here with a bit of a blast," he said. "It will come through at about 10 p.m. and this cold front will blast through the area fairly quickly. The biggest impact will be the high winds which will mix into the valleys later tonight with some wind gusts from 40 to 50 miles per hour, so people might want to tie down things like garbage cans that will probably start blowing around, and there may be some downed trees in the area, as well."

Leach said the system doesn't carry a great deal of snow, but the wind could create problems for travelers.

"There's not a whole lot of snow coming with this system, but the accompanying gusty winds could create hazardous driving conditions, especially over the mountain passes," he said. "Since this system is a fast mover, so, if you're caught up in it, you might want to pull over and wait it out. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes or so."

Leach said he expects the worst of the system to have passed through the area by the time the morning commute begins on Wednesday.
