Forget fancy car alarm systems and OnStar security. Just buy a vehicle with a standard transmission.  They tend to thwart thieves. At least if you believe the periodic crime reports submitted to us by Associated Press.

They report yet another carjacking was avoided due to lack of stick shift know-how. And luckily what was probably a frightening situation did not result in any serious injury.

This incident happened in Pittsburgh. Two suspects tapped on the window of a parked car with the driver inside. They showed a gun, ordered him out of his car and demanded money. The victim said he had no cash, so the robbers demanded his cell phone and car keys. As the crooks got in, the owner told them it was a manual transmission. That's when they decided they didn't want it and ran away.

At last report the suspects were still at large. What I'm wondering is, did the victim tell them the truth? It would be awesome if the car actually was an automatic. :-)     DB
