We want to emphasize that this is legal in the state of Maine, and it's hardly an isolated hunting practice around the country.

But Montana bear hunters would probably cry foul! For nearly a month, Maine bear hunters are allowed to set out bait in advance of the season starting August 28. Doughnuts and pastries seem to be the most popular attention grabbing goodies. Maine Wildlife Biologists will tell you that using bait is critical to keep the state's bear population in control. And while bear season runs until November 25, the use of bait is only allowed until September 23.

Annual bear harvest in Maine is about 3,000. That's a lot of Krispy Kremes!
