It's like that tired old axiom: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If you bury a time capsule to preserve items and no one can find it, did they really exist? Or...something like that.

It's a problem facing some former students of a central Florida middle school, who were part of a class project to bury a time capsule back in 1976. And with the big 40-year commemoration coming up, they'd like to unearth the capsule and reminisce the mementos put in there by their teacher, who also filmed the event.

But none of them can remember where it was buried. The teacher has since passed away and the 8 millimeter camera and film he used is who-knows-where. Another issue is going to be whether something has since been built over the top of the burial site---if they ever do figure it out.

Some resourceful former students are making plans to use metal detectors and ground penetrating radar. And if they do find it, they'll ask permission to dig into their past.

Now I'm really curious about what would best represent a kids' 1976 time capsule!  DB
