A prescription drug disposal event is scheduled for this Saturday at Missoula's Southgate Mall.

Coordinator for the Missoula Prescription Drug Task Force, Brandee Tyree, said the event is the perfect opportunity to get all those old prescription drugs out of the house.

"The whole idea is to dispose of your unneeded, unused prescription medications properly," Tyree said. "The police department will take them at the mall for you, no questions asked. you can bring them in the bottles or in a baggie, we just can't accept syringes or liquids."

Tyree said getting rid of unused prescriptions is important for the safety of everyone in the home.

"Our motto is proper use, proper storage and proper disposal," she said. "Disposing of them is really super helpful in keeping the community safe, your family safe and in some instances, our waterways safe. There was a time when people just flushed their old prescriptions down the toilet, but now we're asking folks to bring their old medications to the mall, or to the permanent drop box at the police station.

The take back event is Saturday, October 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
