UPDATE - 1,000 participated in Missoula Marathon 5k run/walk on Saturday, July 12. Among them, KGVO's Peter Christian, his wife Lorna and her sister Doreen Stevenson.

Race emcee Tony Vanovich is a civil engineer and avid runner. He said the 5k event is much more family-friendly and less competitive than the half or full marathon on Sunday.

"Today is more about just having fun, but the competition really begins tomorrow for the marathon and half-marathon," Vanovich said. "When it's 26 miles, the competition ratchets up quite a ways. Both the races start at Frenchtown, and end up here at Caras Park."

The course was well marked, and staffed with enthusiastic volunteers, and wound its way through established neighborhoods and along the walking trail by the Clark Fork River.

We walked...we ran, we got our medals!
