Outgoing Missoula Police Chief Mark Muir said his official goodbyes to well-wishers at a farewell coffee on Thursday, December 19 in the basement of city hall.

After a 22 year career, Muir said he knew he was leaving at just the right time.

“I know that I’m taking the right step, it’s time to move on,” Muir said. “I have spent the last five, or should I say, the last 23 and a half years preparing these people to fill the void after I leave, and I have no doubt that they will do that.”

The next step for Muir is to wait for his application to the University of Montana law school to be approved.

“Law school is still an option,” Muir said. “I’ll find out more about that in March.”

Muir’s official retirement date is Friday, December 20, the same day that his replacement, Mike Brady will take over as Missoula’s new police chief.

On hand to say goodbye to Muir were Missoula Mayor Jon Engen, Missoula County Attorney Fred Van Valkenburg along with dozens of police officers and office staff.
