September has been in active month for Northern Lights in the U.S. However, with the incredibly dense forest fire smoke, Western Montana stargazers have missed them - until Wednesday night.

A clear night sky coupled with an energetic outburst from the Sun provided some active aurora September 27.

The band of color stretched across the northern portion of the Bitterroot Valley as the solar particles wound through the upper atmosphere of Earth.

Did you miss 'em? You can keep up-to-date on line with spaceweather.com. they have regular alerts as to when the aurora might be active.
